There were a number of opportunities to be involved in medical oncology and doing medical oncology rotations as a medical student, as an internal medicine residential. But there are times that a primary care physician or an internal medicine physician may make the referral. There really was very little.

So those types of relationships, clergy, non family members, we talk about, I think cohabitating unmarried couples. If you see someone, you know, they have no transportation, they’re single, they have food insecurity, those are important in themselves. Widera and Smith have no relationships to disclose.

Because sometimes they have much more longstanding relationships with these patients than me meeting them for a slice in time and trying to shuffle the deck, so to speak. They may have a long relationship with that cardiologist, so it requires some collaboration. But another layer I would add to it is also maybe more patient centric.

So I think just as much as we focus on the science and the evidence, it’s important to think about the art of how we apply that to people and the relationships and all of the great fun stuff, the stories that unfold in the exam room alongside the science itself. And it was born when I was a medical resident at UCSF Internal Medicine.

This includes transportation, driver’s license, parks, volunteerism, housing, and of course health and human services. I knew them, I developed a relationship with them. It’s somebody different every month, and you never develop that relationship. I would go into somebody’s home where I could do a visual check.
