Some of our healthcare systems are hard, and challenging, and I think that it’s time that we have a change. I think there’s maybe a little bit of debate as to when those turn from being just normal age related changes to then being something more, but it happens in many different areas of healthcare. Should eligibility and access be determined by clinician referral? If we move away from clinician referrals as the means by which people get access, how do we keep the clinicians engaged, and not enraged? Should we just use the referrals, whatever’s coming into us, whoever, whatever clinician decides. By diagnosis?

These hick pick codes are available to any chaplain in a healthcare system. Really important person, who later in his life got very interested in healthcare. And as you’ve written in your work, there is a justified mistrust of the healthcare system and an ethic of struggle that needs to be appreciated.

And it’s a bit of a hokey title, but what I try and impress on readers there is that, the reflection that patients see of themselves, at least metaphorically in the eye of the healthcare provider, needs to be one that is affirming of patient dignity. I mean, we all give lip services saying, “Person-centered care is important.”

So, basically, with a stepped care model, the goal is to tailor care delivery to the patient’s needs while at the same time utilizing less clinician resources. There was a difference, though, in hospice utilization, right? I don’t know if we captured where the hospice referral came from. That is correct.
