Our early studies were looking at things like, desire for death, and syndromal depression, and screening for depression and anxiety, and will to live. I guess one question for providers is, as we dive into individual sense of dignity, and I guess threats to that dignity, is potentially feeling like we’re opening this box.

Like, would you include the doctors that I work with, healthcare providers where I live in Marin? And resource utilization was very low in all the groups. And they had requested in their cultural tailing that the physician wore a white coat when he was going to be seen on the screen. It was not very different.

And if I remember that study correctly, it was priming both patients and providers in the outpatient setting to do goals of care conversations. Don’t get me wrong, the evidence points to cost savings, but as Chris Callahan and Kathleen Unroe pointed out in a JAGS editorial in 2020 “in comprehensive dementia care models, savings may accrue to Medicare, but the expenses accrue to a fluid and unstable network of local service providers, patients, and their families.” Eric: Okay.

What was life for you as a provider pre-pandemic? We were the highest utilizers of telemedicine in the whole UCSF health system at that time which we’re very proud of. And so we’re able to provide access to those patients that may be home-bound or home limited or have a lot of struggles to get in.
