So most of our medical schools have simulation centers. I think the first time I noticed it was, like as a medical student when you would rotate on one service with one attending and they would make decisions about how to treat a case one way. We use simulation all the time in training our physicians.

A friend of GeriPal, and prior guest, Guy Micco commented today that we need an RCT for chaplaincy is like the idea that the humanities need to justify their value in medical training: “It’s like being told to measure the taste of orange juice with a ruler.” Really important person, who later in his life got very interested in healthcare.

So it’s a five component scale and it includes slow gate speed, weak and grip strength, exhaustion, unintentional weight loss, and low physical activity, which I really like thinking about those components. And then one day when I was in my third year of medical school, I was in the gym and I hurt my back in a really horrific way. I was helped into a wheelchair kind of rushed to the emergency room, which was not far away because I was on the medical school campus. I thought I couldn’t finish medical school.
