We invited Dani Chammas , a palliative care physician and psychiatrist at UCSF (and a frequent guest to the GeriPal podcast), as well as Brent Kious , a psychiatrist at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, focusing on the management of severe persistent mental illnesses. So it’s a lot of palliation. I gotta get some sleep.

So, basically, with a stepped care model, the goal is to tailor care delivery to the patient’s needs while at the same time utilizing less clinician resources. And it was really good for my mental and physical… Physical health, obviously, but mental health really. So one that the primary outcome was supposed to be documentation, which it improved documentation, it wasn’t powered to actually look at any utilization or hard outcomes. They were slightly mischaracterized.

And so I’m not sure if this is true for Joe or for Brooke, but even before the pandemic in our practice here, we saw somewhere around 40 to 50% of our patients via telemedicine anyway, because we have a catchment area of patients who live very far away, many of whom have a lot of physical disability and other limitations to coming in person.
