Tom: So we did this study because patients who go through the stem cell transplant process face a lot of misery in terms of physical symptoms, psychological distress, anxiety, depression, and even a risk of PTSD afterwards, sort of like a medical trauma, you might think of it. It was really at the level of the ED across 33 EDs in random order, and then tried to see if we could make a difference in healthcare utilization, primarily the primary outcome was admission to the hospital, acute care admission. Would it have changed potentially utilization rates like hospice utilization? No, no, no.

And then secondly, around some of our quality measures, there’s been differences found in multiple papers by many teams around hospice disenrollment, higher rates of hospice disenrollment in for-profit hospices, and higher rates of healthcare utilization. As a nurse case manager in hospice, half of my patients had dementia.
