We’re doing a lot of interactive relationship building. Second thing to say is that I think referrals are really important. I have hired coaches based on referrals. Medicine’s a tough road for everybody, and we put all kinds of barriers in the way in addition. Although, to me, that blurs together a little bit.

There were a number of opportunities to be involved in medical oncology and doing medical oncology rotations as a medical student, as an internal medicine residential. And sort of a few years ago, we would sometimes see referrals a bit later than we would have liked. There really was very little. So I think education is key.

By the time he got into us, the tumor grew, he had experienced, he was experiencing significant pain and so trauma, informed care and building a relationship with him was such a big part of the care. It’s that first place that you start where it may not be the AAAs job, but we’ve organized where they have to have the partnerships and they know who the players are and they know who to make a referral to. And that referral can be done in real time, a soft handoff. I knew them, I developed a relationship with them.
