They do choose to rely more on their family and parents in ways that might feel like a step backwards and is yet, still developmentally appropriate and autonomous. That’s why we use the terms assessment and intervention and we think of assessment as a skill of a very advanced skill that chaplains have of doing an in-depth evaluation of a patient or family member, and then the interventions should certainly follow naturally from that. I would say the drugs didn’t change as much as all the stuff about sexuality and about family dynamics and spirituality: all the things that I’m hoping people will get from this book. It’s hard to explain that to the family. Let the family know. The morphine family, there’s some pretty good data.
