And this is really traumatic event for his street family and the street community that he knew. As you can imagine, get referrals from healthcare workers, emergency departments, primary care, cancer care hospital, you know, internal medicine to our service. And that’s about half of our referrals.

Through a series of events, I started working as a consultant to the Department of Corrections in around 2006, and I was assigned to the California Medical Facility. It’s like a long, I don’t know, almost like a quarter-mile centipede with legs, and the legs are the housing units, the medical units, inpatient mental health.

And now when I think about the clinic at Duke, when we’re really running on all cylinders, we can get ourselves up to a five, six, seven week wait for a new palliative care referral. Additionally, in case patients didn’t step up, we did have sort of events where they were scheduled to see palliative care. Stupid theory.

I have 24,500 veterans on our caseload, 14,000 individuals with diagnosed mental health issue, 8,500 with an alcohol and substance abuse. And that referral can be done in real time, a soft handoff. I would hope a referral would go to what’s called an ADRC, and it’s called an Aging and Disability Resource Center.
