When a critical illness or injury occurs, then, we should all be thankful that we live within a society where emergent, life-saving medical care is available. Instead of providing emergent care, it seems I spend at least half of my emergency room time now playing doctor to chronic illnesses. And our ER is not alone.

I dedicate this to each of you who have cared for or are currently caring for an ill parent or family member. Although this may seem like it should be the standard, you would be surprised at just how many elderly patients present to our emergency department alone. The aide and I continued to lead the patient into the room.

How, though, do we navigate anxiety and help our patients who may end up in the anxiety spiral that becomes so hard to get out of? I returned my gaze to this patient and gave her a smile as I approached her bedside. It was my way of acknowledging and validating their efforts in helping their ill parent in a time of need. It had presented soon after she had eaten a BLT sandwich for lunch. Her mouth's edges lifted slightly into a hesitant return smile.
