The recommendations do not apply to inpatient hospital care, in the emergency department or other observed settings. The 2022 guideline, as with the 2016 guideline, reiterates that it does not apply to pain management related to sickle cell disease or cancer-related pain treatment, palliative care and end-of-life care.
