I initially got into it because I was really looking at the psychophysiology of stress, and so how stress affects our health and how relationships were always a component of that. But then recognizing that our relationships impact our health even outside the context of stress. Or was that just the lingering conversations?

So elderly people who aspirated, got pneumonia, had an mi, didn’t get hauled off to the emergency room on an ambulance crew so they could die in the ER. And so I thought about it a while, called, and sure enough, they brought him up to the emergency room. Widera and Smith have no relationships to disclose.

The idea was to create a robust community-based infrastructure that could help older adults succeed in their homes and communities, whether they were healthy, how to keep them healthy or they were at imminent risk of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, or nursing home placements. I knew them, I developed a relationship with them.
