If we move away from clinician referrals as the means by which people get access, how do we keep the clinicians engaged, and not enraged? It’s that first place that you start where it may not be the AAAs job, but we’ve organized where they have to have the partnerships and they know who the players are and they know who to make a referral to. And that referral can be done in real time, a soft handoff. I think most states have them.

We were the highest utilizers of telemedicine in the whole UCSF health system at that time which we’re very proud of. So if you count talking to a nurse on the telephone and then writing an electronic prescription as a form of telemedicine, that was the norm for hospice prescribing of controlled substances even before the pandemic.
