Prior podcasts on the ethics of nudging , and a different trial conducted by Kate and Scott in which the default for hospitalized seriously ill patients was to receive a palliative care consult. This specific study , published in JAMA Internal Medicine, was conducted in 17 ICUs in North Carolina. Many were community hospitals.

Been in the hospital four times, vented, been told the story to her family, she won’t live. Within the VA it’s now at 70 VA hospitals. It started here at Madison at one and it’s also spread outside the VA now to hospitals in Boston, Providence and now starting up actually in California and UCLA and UCSF.

Todd: There are some studies that’ll show decreased readmission if they’re stopped in hospital. I say there’s mixed evidence. It’s a little hard to, I think come to an inclusive recommendation.
