I asked him about his family. Over my numerous years as an ER doctor, I have met people that I never would have had the fortune, or misfortune (as some would say), to otherwise meet. And yet, he was without a supportive family. It was she who got me to volunteer for my first Special Olympics as a teenager.

Okay, now I'll admit I've done a horrible job of keeping up with the blog lately especially given that this is only my fifth post of the year, but today is still super special for me. Later on in the month, I was able to take my daughter on a family trip to my alma mater LSU.

My voice is nothing special. I’m originally an ER physician. I’d been doing ER medicine for over a decade when I went back to palliative fellowship. And we got all into his family stuff and how he’d been suffering with cancer and his goal. I think that’s more palliative than me. It was beautiful.

He uses comics and other artwork to share his experiences in palliative care and educate others about topics like empathy and communication skills. And a doc over in Spain named Monica Lalanda, who is an ER doc and also a cartoonist, reached out to me and said you don’t have to do this anonymously. That blew my mind. Eric: Yeah.

primary palliative care interventions seem to fail, whereas specialized palliative care interventions have a relatively robust track record of success. You know, most, most ERs admit, you know, far fewer than 50% of their patients. They go to observation and go home or just get discharged straight from the ER?
