Rainbows Light the Way

Integrated Care News by CFHA

Happy Pride Month to everyone! And when I say everyone, I mean EVERY single one of you—every human striving to survive and thrive in a world where that can seem impossible. Together, we are a chorus singing in exam rooms, classrooms, courtrooms, boardrooms, voting booths, chat rooms, and every room we can and do squeeze into.

Between Patients: The Myth of Multitasking

A Country Doctor Writes

I wrote this in 2017, when I was working with a simple EMR and when my practice had 15 minute visits. Years later, after adopting Epic, we never got over what was supposed to be a temporary slowing down to 30 minute visits while learning the new system. I have heard of practices where providers tell their patients that they’ll get 10 minutes face-to-face, so the doctor has enough time to work the computer, documenting the 10 minute encounter.

Because your health matters

Family Physicians of Cedar Rapids

June is Men’s Health Month, and here at our office, we want to take a moment to focus on the fathers, brothers, sons, husbands, coworkers, and friends, who often put their health last on the list. We see it all the time: “I’m fine.” “I’ll go next month.” “I don’t have time for that right now.” But the truth is, taking care of yourself isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength.

Double-Booking the Doctor is Half-Booking the Patient

A Country Doctor Writes

I wrote this in 2016, when my visits were shorter because that EMR was simpler. But the math is the same, no matter how long your normal appointments are. I have always tried to “squeeze” urgent visits in when I know the patient and the issue they’re having. I never liked when somebody else decided which patient and what kind of problem could be handled in half the time of another person’s appointment that could be something that, if anything, could have been expected to
