Context Palliative medicine focuses on quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. Objective Describe the population of patients referred to a palliative care clinic and observe their healthcare utilization patterns. Referrals were predominantly from Pulmonology (60%). Should eligibility and access be determined by clinician referral? By diagnosis? If we move away from clinician referrals as the means by which people get access, how do we keep the clinicians engaged, and not enraged? We can’t possibly meet the needs of all people with newly diagnosed serious illness. By prognosis?
