To be eligible in Canada patients must have a “ grievous and irremediable ” condition, including disability ; they do not have to have a terminal illness with a prognosis of less than 6 months. A planned expansion of MAID to include people with mental illness was placed on hold until March 2024. So less than six months to live.

Michele: Yeah, so in May of 2018, there was an article by Suleika Jaouad in the New York Times Magazine, and they spent about two weeks in our hospice with us learning about the work that’s done. But now we have older people dying of older people illnesses. Eric: Wait, so Bonnie Raitt sang a song about hospice in prison?

Ken Covinsky reminds us that we should not be making a diagnosis based on what we see on TV, and that if a patient’s daughter expressed a concern that their parent “wasn’t right,” we would conduct an in depth evaluation that might last an hour. You hear people, a lot of talking heads on tv. I am unable to make certain pronouncements.
