Someone who’s healthy in their 60s and just got diagnosed with diabetes, yeah, they might benefit, if they have a very long life expectancy, to prevent that decline in kidney function. Those have a very, very long time horizon. So the time to benefit page is trying to make the mortality indexes link more closely to the time to benefit.

So, for example, everyone who was diagnosed with an advanced or metastatic lung cancer had a prognosis on the order of months. And now when I think about the clinic at Duke, when we’re really running on all cylinders, we can get ourselves up to a five, six, seven week wait for a new palliative care referral. Stupid theory.

I have 24,500 veterans on our caseload, 14,000 individuals with diagnosed mental health issue, 8,500 with an alcohol and substance abuse. And that referral can be done in real time, a soft handoff. I would hope a referral would go to what’s called an ADRC, and it’s called an Aging and Disability Resource Center.
