I initially got into it because I was really looking at the psychophysiology of stress, and so how stress affects our health and how relationships were always a component of that. But then recognizing that our relationships impact our health even outside the context of stress. Like I said, the patient screened positive for it.

So if you can think about certain decisions like continuing to screen for certain cancers like colon cancer or breast cancer, or how strict you should control diabetes or blood pressures. I had it on my screen. And as a resident, I just was drawn, similar to many oncology clinicians and fellows, to just be traumatic and difficult experience of patients with blood cancers during prolonged and intense hospitalizations, where they experience a lot of physical symptoms, emotional trauma related to the diagnoses.

The results were that the chat bots got the diagnoses right and had an escalation strategy that was better than the doctors, as judged by blinded specialists reading the transcripts. It was specific to the relationship with the patient, the patient’s social context in which they might take this information. They had no idea.

One in 10 people with newly diagnosed HIV is an older adult. And over that first 15 years, which was a very difficult time when there was no treatment at all available, everybody died and usually within months or a year or two of when they were diagnosed. And I also read that 1 out of 10 newly diagnosed HIV cases are in older adults.

I guess I’m just sticking to the position that I would like someday to be able to diagnose Alzheimer’s as well as Lewy body disease, et cetera before someone has disabling impairments.
