Whenever I take care of a patient, I see myself as a family practice doctor, but I’ve been a hospitalist, I’ve been a primary care doctor, and I’ve done palliative. Our folks all die of congestive heart failure and dementia, even oncology diagnoses with new immunotherapies like the old days.

And the actors were blinded to whether this was a primary care doctor or a chat bot answering them. The results were that the chat bots got the diagnoses right and had an escalation strategy that was better than the doctors, as judged by blinded specialists reading the transcripts. One in 10 people with newly diagnosed HIV is an older adult. Our second guest, Meredith Greene, is a geriatrician and researcher who focuses on care of older adults living with HIV, in the US and Africa. And I also read that 1 out of 10 newly diagnosed HIV cases are in older adults. The HIV clinics also served as primary care.

And that really is what prompted me to get certified as a sexual education provider. A lot of people, and we have some data to say that you might have distress, but sex is not one of the reasons for your distress when you’re first diagnosed. So most of us in primary care, it’s probably even worse.

And we would provide ongoing longitudinal care to them in the home, much like the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors programs, and other programs like that.
