The insight started when Carmen, an orthopedic surgeon-researcher, and Katie, a physical therapist- researcher participated in ride-alongs with EMS providers to patient’s homes. Going into patient’s homes was eye opening. It was eyeopening to see patients in their own home. And so that really triggered my interest.

So we looked at hospital referral regions, and we looked at high- and low- intensity regions. Ruth: Very strong odor, devoid of furniture, broken screens … Eric: So it was the physical environment and … Ruth: Physical environment. Nursing homes are subsidized by their Medicare, by their rehab patients.

We see our patients and our families throughout the illness trajectory into the hospital. And maybe we should have more patient-centered conversations. We want to do meaningful work and so we want to know that the conversations we have impact patient care. And I kind of think our patients are on this longer journey, right?
