While having these things can make life a bit easier and provide you with more practice options, they are not an absolute necessity. The umbrella of protection that residency provides is no longer available, and you have to be able to make quick decisions on your feet and balance a large number of patients in a given shift.

Check out some of their recent work, including: Dr. Holt-Lunstad’s and Dr. Perissinotto’s powerful perspective piece in the New England Journal of Medicine which provides a clinical framework for addressing loneliness and social isolation. I think I feel more comfortable as a provider in trying to support people in their isolation.
