I think that study was really important, especially I think the message that I give people is you can do something as simple as calling a consultation and improve quality of life months later. Why is that important in the emergency room? Actually, our training as emergency physicians is mostly to resuscitate to acute care.

So elderly people who aspirated, got pneumonia, had an mi, didn’t get hauled off to the emergency room on an ambulance crew so they could die in the ER. It turns out there’s at least pretty good data that actually the better you know somebody, the more intimate your relationship with them, the worse you are, not the better, but the worse you are at predicting their preferences values. We do consults all the time on these where different people will say, no, it makes sense to try.
