We think there are some cases, certain kinds of illnesses or conditions or operations, where people have the surgery and never get out of bed again. So for example, tracheostomies frequently occur in patients who are quite ill, but it’s not the trach itself that tends to lead to the mortality, it’s their generalized illness.

Most emergency providers wanted to do the right thing for seriously ill patients, but they didnt have the knowledge, skills, or experience to do it.

We consult all the time on patients who have advanced directors who say one thing and we’re in a situation where it’s clear they want to do something else.

Alex 10:53 Yeah, or like palliative care if they get a consult for whatever reason, but not trn consult, like standardized, you know, randomized to palliative care versus whatever they’re doing before. If they get palliative care consult, they get one. If they don’t, they don’t. Is this superior to that?
