Over my numerous years as an ER doctor, I have met people that I never would have had the fortune, or misfortune (as some would say), to otherwise meet. My thoughts immediately went to my sister, Susie, who has had a long and fulfilling career as a Special Education Teacher. Michael continued this path.

primary palliative care interventions seem to fail, whereas specialized palliative care interventions have a relatively robust track record of success. I think that study was really important, especially I think the message that I give people is you can do something as simple as calling a consultation and improve quality of life months later.

He uses comics and other artwork to share his experiences in palliative care and educate others about topics like empathy and communication skills. And a doc over in Spain named Monica Lalanda, who is an ER doc and also a cartoonist, reached out to me and said you don’t have to do this anonymously. That blew my mind.

And the hard part is, as a provider in palliative care, I actually have very little say of which hospice the individuals we consult to go to. It’s going to be published as a special report in JPM I hope in May with as of today, 279, I think HPM physician colleagues, signatures including 21 of the living past presidents of the academy.

So elderly people who aspirated, got pneumonia, had an mi, didn’t get hauled off to the emergency room on an ambulance crew so they could die in the ER. They have a special skill, and when they see someone who needs it, they need to use it. That makes it really special for them and for me. That’s why we did it.
