For example, and not to criticize medical students, but sometimes you get an M1 or M2 writing about burnout in physicians, and sometimes I’m like, okay, that’s a harder piece to write about. I think the first time I noticed it was, like as a medical student when you would rotate on one service with one attending and they would make decisions about how to treat a case one way. So we got community members who said that if their loved one were ever to get sick, they would be the one who would be the decision maker.

On the other hand, if you’re a healthcare professional, you have a personal experience, that is a version of expertise in the public sector that doesn’t necessarily count. Are you trying to reach people in your local community? So that gives you a sense of perspective. Also, are you trying to reach policymakers?

Well, the irony is that this diethye resurrected from the poorest communities in the mediterranean region. One of the things I’m now involved in teaching medical students and the bottom line is that everybody who’s in medical school is smart enough to graduate medical school. And then I get to choose who I call on because one of the things is I was this medical student who was like a gunner.
