So I think as palliative care clinicians, we use narrative as we try to understand more about the persons that we’re caring for and their families. Been in the hospital four times, vented, been told the story to her family, she won’t live. And so I really gain that and I love the chorus words that she uses in this song.

So we take that science and we apply it to something that’s very messy and chaotic, like a human being or a community or a population. I think it started off from a need, a hunger in the community. I think the first time I noticed it was, like as a medical student when you would rotate on one service with one attending and they would make decisions about how to treat a case one way. So they used the same shtick, but that non-verbal communication was very different. And so have some of my mentees. And very time-consuming.

What is it about the images of the dying that helps teach medical students? And I think up until the time when my aunt was passing, I had been very afraid of the idea of death in my family. I’m also a geriatrician and a palliative care physician, so I’ve talked to families and patients about death and dying.

I came from a family where you didn’t write things down, somebody could find them and hold you to them or all of that kind of stuff. There’s a little paranoia in the family for good reason. Are you trying to reach people in your local community? I am not a writer naturally. And so I just didn’t like to write.

For example, is reluctance to take on more responsibility at work or relocate because you feel inadequate or is it because of genuine concern about the impact on your family? Yeah, I wouldn’t say that I learned that from books as much as I learned that from, as you are saying, a sort of revised approach to medical students at UCSF.
