While we like to think about how our goals and preferences will influence what that life looks like, including whether you will get potentially burdensome interventions, your fate is probably influenced more by factors like where you live and what nursing home you happen to end up in. . We didn’t see that in the high rate nursing home.

Why is that important in the emergency room? Actually, our training as emergency physicians is mostly to resuscitate to acute care. So Tammie developed something called EPIC for Emergency medicine, which is a curriculum that was one of the first ways that I think palliative care got spread in our community.

Don’t get me wrong, the evidence points to cost savings, but as Chris Callahan and Kathleen Unroe pointed out in a JAGS editorial in 2020 “in comprehensive dementia care models, savings may accrue to Medicare, but the expenses accrue to a fluid and unstable network of local service providers, patients, and their families.” Malaz: I love it.

Lucky, Jim and many others like him were willing to come on to our podcast those first several months of the pandemic and share their experiences and lessons learned caring for COVID positive patients and their family members. . Or, if they were in the emergency room and decided to be admitted for comfort measures only, I would admit them.
