So we measure things like hospitalizations and ed visits and the like, and those data are a bit weaker, but they’re also, you know, I think they need to be contextualized in what, why we would even want to reduce hospitalizations right. We talk about diagnosis, et cetera, but it’s almost more of a community conversation.

As Thor notes, capturing patient stories has face validity as positively impacting the patients who share their stories and have them documented, and for the clinicians who get to truely and deeply know their patients in far greater depth than “what brought you to the hospital?” Every Veteran has a story. Our mission is to help them tell it.

Alex: And we are also delighted to welcome Areej El-Jawahri, who is an oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital as well, who specializes in blood cancers. So at least in my oncology community, I really didn’t have anyone guiding or supporting or mentoring me. They all self-identified as a hospital based practice.

Prior podcasts on the ethics of nudging , and a different trial conducted by Kate and Scott in which the default for hospitalized seriously ill patients was to receive a palliative care consult. Many were community hospitals. The intervention was a negative study for the primary outcome, hospital length of stay.

Emmy: Ended up starting a program, outpatient at our hospital at the time. How did you get interested in this? Is this our role?
