Patients were recruited from primary care practices, emergency rooms and urgent care centers, and the community (e.g., Guidelines currently suggest treating ARS with antibiotics when persistent symptoms or double sickening occur.

In case you miss the introductions at the start of the podcast, Bernie and Laurie are married, and offer wonderful reminiscence of their clinical practice over the last several decades. What words to use? Is the POLST useful? Under what circumstances? Should we abandon the term, “comfort measures?” ICU care was pretty rudimentary.

Can you come and be in our clinic once a week? It used to also be a social worker and myself who would actually go to clinic and spend some time up there. Gretchen: Yeah, I think probably the underlying story here is that I’m really good at doing negative randomized clinical trials, but there is a good thing about doing a big clinical trial, which is that you get tons of data even if you don’t end up with the result that you want. And that’s how we connected.
