And when I was getting my PhD, I wanted to find something that spoke to me, and I had been doing clinical work in nursing homes. It’s both institutionalized racism where there are policies and practices by corporations, by government that create inequality. And because of this encounter, this patient went to the emergency room twice due to having panic episodes that felt like heart attacks. We do a lot of clinical focused discussions.

Don’t get me wrong, the evidence points to cost savings, but as Chris Callahan and Kathleen Unroe pointed out in a JAGS editorial in 2020 “in comprehensive dementia care models, savings may accrue to Medicare, but the expenses accrue to a fluid and unstable network of local service providers, patients, and their families.” Malaz: I love it.
