Our focus today, however, was on her most recently published book titled How to Say Goodby e. This beautiful book began as a very personal project for Wendy while she was the artist-in-residence at Zen Hospice. They had triple diagnoses, often life threatening illness, but also mental illness and usually some kind of addiction.

Poetry helps us grapple with our own experiences of illness. When I was about nine-years-old, they gave me a book of poems of Edna St. In school, I was asked to write a book report, and instead of writing a book report, I wrote a poem that went. Because I’ve read poems my whole life, I have lots of poetry books.

And the two were sort of intermeshed even to the point in the eighties, the thought was all dementia is Alzheimer’s or it’s some medical illness or combination of other stuff that’s not about it. That’s in my view as analogous as to any other illness. You need the plaques to have that illness.

One in 10 people with newly diagnosed HIV is an older adult. And over that first 15 years, which was a very difficult time when there was no treatment at all available, everybody died and usually within months or a year or two of when they were diagnosed. And I also read that 1 out of 10 newly diagnosed HIV cases are in older adults.
