If you look in the diagnostical statistical manual, right, the sort of handbook for diagnoses, most of the diagnostic criteria are in some important ways kind of arbitrary, right? The question I would ask is, how helpful is that in our clinical practice? And how do you think about it as a psychiatrist?

They get some training in their master’s program on research and they get some training certainly on writing papers, but then you get into clinical practice and it’s like a language. And then my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer and she was treated there. And sometimes social workers feel intimidated by it, too.

By rushing this into clinical practice and suddenly saying people that have positive amyloid based on an imperfect biomarker, especially now they have Alzheimer’s disease, I think we’re opening massive potential for harm and distress and predatory practices upon these people. I’m not. I share that vision.
