In 2019 we discussed the basics of why patients wait a long time to hear back, get through on the phone lines, or be seen with a primary care doctor. This has led to a “shortage” of primary care doctors, both in Rhode Island and nationally. In Rhode Island, the wait continues to be much longer.

A recent study of almost 3 million US patients showed that those who visited primary care were much more likely to receive preventive services : 127% more vaccinations, 122% more colonoscopies, and 75% more mammograms. Each of the cited research studies has its own specific limitations.
