I like to tell my trainees… Often with the earliest stage trainees, they’ll go in the room and they’ll ask the patient what brought them to the hospital. They’re in the hospital for the past 60 days, and they haven’t had been able to talk to anybody about their favorite hobby. Not a lot of blogs out there.

And really they’re trying to understand what reasonable quality of life can this person expect to achieve and just agonizing over those decisions, over every individual decision. That makes us lots of money for our hospital, but none of them want to be in the ICU and a respirator because we’re not making as much money off of that.
