Somebody shouts at my front Desk staff because they’re pissed off about their appointment time. I said, you know, I don’t usually start my appointments in laughter. And I think that’s why by the end of the appointment, we were able to go to equally deep places that were pretty dark and pretty heavy together.

If they get palliative care consult, they get one. It’s about establishing a relationship and rapport.

Another thing you could do is let’s really encourage discussion ahead of time between the appointed surrogate and the patient while the patient’s competent about patients preferences about their values. We do consults all the time on these where different people will say, no, it makes sense to try. The chances are too low.
