Why is that important in the emergency room? Actually, our training as emergency physicians is mostly to resuscitate to acute care. So Tammie developed something called EPIC for Emergency medicine, which is a curriculum that was one of the first ways that I think palliative care got spread in our community.

This model will give participating programs a per-member-per-month payment to offer care management, care coordination, and other services such as caregiver training, disease education, and respite. I had the tenacity and education to try to figure this out. This money allow me to take care of the caregiver, educate them, support them.

My guess is out in the community there’s more pressure to initiate dialysis for various reasons. But more and more patients end up in emergency rooms and ICUs and they’re unrepresented. It may not be.
