Opposition from a coalition of the tobacco lobby and the recovery community prevailed to kill the bill. However, many towns, including Portland, South Portland, Falmouth, Brunswick, Bangor, Bar Harbor and Hallowell, passed ordinances banning flavored tobacco in their communities.
