Looking at ABIM physicians, 11,374 physicians have been certified in geriatric medicine since it was first offered in 1988, with 4,740 currently maintaining a valid certification. In 2024, 75% of ABIM Board Certified geriatricians who chose an assessment opted for the LKA, while 68% of ABFM geriatricians chose the LKA.

At this meeting, the Rheumatology Board received statistics on the current state of active certification in rheumatology, assessment enrollment, demographics and pass rates, and data from post-assessment surveys. ABIM is always looking for physicians to join the Item-Writing Task Forces and help write questions for assessments.

In 2024, 78% of hematologists who were due for an assessment and chose to enroll in one chose the LKA over the traditional, 10-year MOC exam, which is on par with the average across specialties. Dr. van Havre spoke about ASH’s efforts to map educational materials to topics in the hematology taxonomy and assign competency levels to each one.

A small number of infectious disease physicians are dual-certified, meaning they maintain an additional certification—the largest number (208) in critical care medicine.
