So we did a podcast on aging and homelessness with Margot Kushel in 2023. You know, we found that 64% of the people we cared for never went to the hospital or ER. They want you to recognize their pain, not just their physical pain, but their trauma that they’ve experienced as a, as a, as a result of being on the streets.

So elderly people who aspirated, got pneumonia, had an mi, didn’t get hauled off to the emergency room on an ambulance crew so they could die in the ER. It happened to my mother. Louise, what happened to your mom? That’s why we did it.

In the United States in 2023, the truth of the matter is you don’t need very many individual risk factors to become homeless. These were usually very physically demanding, low paid, often usually non-union work, that they worked their whole lives and were hanging on by their fingernails. We know what their income is.
