The AMA points out that doctors must have more schooling and significantly more clinical experience than nurse practitioners. Five states have granted NPs full practice authority since 2021, with Utah the most recent state to remove physician supervision requirements , in 2023. Today, about 18% of the U.S. population is 65 or over.
