A 2020 RCT of coaching for primary care physicians shows that coaching improves burnout well-being during the intervention and has a sustained duration at 6 months of follow up. Essentially we’re testing the early integrated palliative care model, which is monthly visits with a specialty trained palliative care physician or advanced practice provider for patients who are diagnosed with advanced non small cell lung cancer. We would make referrals to psycho oncology. So those social workers were involved.

I have 24,500 veterans on our caseload, 14,000 individuals with diagnosed mental health issue, 8,500 with an alcohol and substance abuse. And that referral can be done in real time, a soft handoff. I would hope a referral would go to what’s called an ADRC, and it’s called an Aging and Disability Resource Center.
