Then I got online as a patient advocate and started connecting with the brain tumor community on social media and Facebook and Twitter, and actually started working in the healthcare space, in palliative care advocacy, for a palliative care advocacy organization in California, which is where I’m based, about eight years ago.

So we take that science and we apply it to something that’s very messy and chaotic, like a human being or a community or a population. I think it started off from a need, a hunger in the community. But I really wanted this project to be a love letter to that community. A love letter kind of back to my community.

So we have community volunteers who often they have a background in writing or background in healthcare, certainly an interest in interviewing and an interest in writing. And then we also have another Vas, many of the interviews are done by medical students or other healthcare trainees as part of their clinical rotation at the VA.

And also, by the fall of 2020, I was pretty sure that I didn’t want to be a leader anymore. That sense of community in the workplace has changed substantially, and we don’t know the mid or long term impact, and we truly don’t know how it’s going to affect professional well being. I can make decisions quickly.
