The initial RCT published on physician coaching in JAMA in 2019 showing that coaching improves quality of life. My wife, who’s a PhD nurse practitioner, who actually was a founding dean of the nursing school at GW, and I were thinking about, well, we’re not sure we want to work for somebody else all the time.

I talked about lack of prestige and respect, and I talked about how healthcare system leaders and medical school deans don’t always seem to value the field of geriatrics. But then I realized who I wasn’t hearing from, I did not hear from the CEO of my organization, my healthcare organization. One was very surprising.

I remember as a fellow, I would come in and our nurse practitioner on our hospice team, I would say the word narcotics, and f or half an hour, she would just lay into me.
