When I’m on palliative care consults and attending in our hospice unit we have to counsel patients about deprescribing and de-intensifying diabetes medications. Our last podcast was with Laura Petrillo in 2018 – 5 years ago seems ancient history – though many of the points still apply today (e.g. Goldilocks zone).

The insight started when Carmen, an orthopedic surgeon-researcher, and Katie, a physical therapist- researcher participated in ride-alongs with EMS providers to patient’s homes. And yet, after assisting the older adult to their feet, the EMS providers would leave. I think, as providers, we don’t get to see that.

Eloise 10:29 Yeah, I think what we saw in California was, prior to legalization, there was curiosity, but also a lot of their healthcare professionals didn’t know enough about it, so they didn’t discuss it with them. Through a series of events, I started working as a consultant to the Department of Corrections in around 2006, and I was assigned to the California Medical Facility. Michele: The article was 2018, but I think Bonnie read the article more recently. They didn’t have a mentor, a financial provider, all of those things.

I think they may not be likely to provide much benefit, but because they’re water soluble and you just pee it out, they’re probably not causing much harm, except for potentially financial harm if they’re very costly. It’s just that he was foregoing things that we think would have provided him more benefit.

She was a post-graduate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (the branch which covers pregnancy and the female reproductive system) and she had won various accolades during her student and consultant days.
