The impact of neighborhood socioeconomic status, a major social determinant of health, on access to these surgeries in outpatient care is significant and warrants examination.

Our last podcast was with Laura Petrillo in 2018 – 5 years ago seems ancient history – though many of the points still apply today (e.g. Nadine: I would argue, insurance doesn’t agree, that anyone with diabetes should be on a CGM at least initially for behavior modification. Goldilocks zone).

And you could say the same thing about insurance companies. Insurance companies will pay for a lot of drugs that have really not a whole lot of evidence at a lot of costs. But to this day, I haven’t heard of an insurance company that’s willing to cover cannabis. I mean, I had a woman who completely got her life back.

Eric: For those of you don’t know, Emmy was on our podcast back in 2018 … man, pre-COVID times. But then once it was open, started seeing a lot of other populations: not just our own hospital population, but a lot more just community members calling with concerns about driving. Weren’t those the days? Eric: Yeah.

Michele: Yeah, so in May of 2018, there was an article by Suleika Jaouad in the New York Times Magazine, and they spent about two weeks in our hospice with us learning about the work that’s done. Michele: The article was 2018, but I think Bonnie read the article more recently. It’s by choice, just like in the community.
