The number of people who have used MAID in Canada since it was legalized in 2016 has increased year on year from about 1,000 people in the first year to over 13,000 people in 2022. In 2016 there were about a thousand MAID deaths, in 2021 there were about 10,000. So it started off for individuals with a terminal illness.

And he was so thankful that he kind of ended up in the hepatic coma and got diagnosed with liver cancer because it was his chance to be linked to treatment for addiction, which is so extreme.

Melissa: The other scenario that exists is just disenrollment because an individual is hospitalized. If you look at that tail, there’s sometimes an individual will call 911, go to the hospital, be disenrolled, the hospice doesn’t have to then pay for that episode. People across all diagnoses want hospice care.
