Since 2013, ABIM Specialty Boards have been required to include at least one physician member primarily engaged in community practice, defined broadly in applications as “clinical practice in a non-university, community setting.” These physicians currently do not have a pathway to Board Eligibility.

This is now being reviewed by the American Board of Medical Specialties, which oversees ABIM.
