We start off part one by interviewing Michele DiTomas, who has been the longstanding Medical Director of the Hospice unit and currently is also the Chief Medical Executive for the Palliative care Initiative with the California Correctional Healthcare Services. So in 2010, there were about 150,000 incarcerated people in California.

Many years ago for the first study; I believe it was in 2009, 2010; I met with Susan Mitchell at the Institute for Aging Research, and told her that I wanted to study the use of feeding tubes for people with advanced dementia. Rehabbed to Death. My question is, why this study, and why now?

Chris 07:41 Yeah, it’s a really interesting thing, because the 2010 article was solving the problem of, hey, send us patients, we promise we won’t kill them. We did not just rely on a physical symptom measure, which many of our colleagues are doing. It’s not just about physical symptom management.
